Telehealth for Mental Health: How Virtual Psychiatric Care Works

A patient's guide to virtual psychiatric evaluations, how video visits work, preparation tips, and clinical suitability.

Access to high-quality mental health care should not be limited by geographic distance, suburban traffic, work schedules, or mobility constraints. In recent years, telepsychiatry has become an established, evidence-based way to deliver outpatient psychiatric evaluations, ongoing medication management, and mental health consultations.

Virtual care may let you receive psychiatric care from your computer, tablet, or smartphone, without traveling to our Orland Park or Willowbrook offices.

What to Expect: How Virtual Psychiatric Appointments Work

A telepsychiatry appointment works much like an in-office consultation, conducted over a two-way video connection through the practice's telehealth platform:

1. Intake & Paperwork

Before your session, you complete intake forms and your past medical history as directed by our office.

2. Check-In

Our office will explain how to check in and join your video visit. You can join from a phone, tablet, or computer.

3. Clinical Consultation

Your provider connects with you by video for a face-to-face consultation to evaluate symptoms and review your treatment plan.

Preparing for Your Virtual Appointment: Patient Checklist

A few simple preparations help keep your session clear, private, and productive:

1. Private, Secure Location:

Choose a quiet room where you cannot be overheard by coworkers or family members. For maximum privacy, use wired or Bluetooth headphones with a built-in microphone.

2. Strong Internet Connection:

Connect to a reliable home Wi-Fi network or stable cellular LTE/5G connection. Position yourself close to your router to avoid audio latency or video buffering.

3. Optimal Lighting & Camera Angle:

Place your light source (a window or lamp) in front of you rather than behind you. Elevate your device so the camera is positioned at eye level, allowing natural eye contact.

4. Medication & Health Records:

Have your current prescription bottles, recent medical notes, and pharmacy information on hand so your clinician can review exact dosages and confirm your pharmacy.

Who Is Eligible for Telepsychiatry?

Research shows telepsychiatry can be as effective as in-person care for many psychiatric conditions. However, clinical safety determines the appropriate care setting:

Well-Suited for Telehealth:
  • Diagnostic psychiatric evaluations, when appropriate.
  • Routine medication management follow-up visits.
  • Depression, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and ADHD check-ins.
  • Patients with mobility challenges, transportation barriers, or busy professional schedules.
Requires In-Person Care:
  • Interventional treatments: Spravato® nasal spray (given only in a REMS-certified healthcare setting, with monitoring) and TMS therapy.
  • Visits that need an in-person physical exam.
  • Emergencies, including severe psychosis or active suicidal intent, need emergency care: call 988 or 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Insurance Coverage & Visit Location

Coverage for virtual visits varies by plan. Please call our office to confirm whether your plan is accepted before your first visit.

Telehealth video visits are available for patients located in Illinois or Indiana during the visit. Availability varies by provider, and our office will confirm whether a video visit is right for you. If you have questions about technical setup or connecting to your session, contact our clinic intake team at (708) 799-8384.
